Motor Types Part 1 (Squirrel Cage and Wound Rotor Induction)

The workhorse of the motor industry is the AC Squirrel Cage Induction Motor. According to Research Insight Portfolio the global Squirrel Cage Induction Motor market was valued at US$ 13 Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach US$ 17 Billion by 2030.  Why so popular? Low cost, low maintenance and rugged design. Although super critical and not going away soon, the DC motor commutation and synchronous motor DC fields require far more maintenance, external excitation, and supervision. Simple induction motors have no commutation, no slip rings, and no external excitation. They are simple, self-starting with a high start-up torque with a constant speed unless used with a variable frequency drive. With minimal maintenance and electric motor testing the AC induction motor has a long life expectancy.
